Lecture 22 Flashcards
List and describe the 3 types of hazards
Chemical- Harmful substances in air, water, soil, and food
Physical- Radiation, fire, natural disasters, lightning
Biological - bacteria, viruses, allergens
Define risk
the level of possible suffering caused by a hazard
What are some cultural hazards?
smoking, drinking, driving, drugs, poor diet
Define Toxicity
a measurement of the amount of harm, injury or risk of death a chemical hazard possesses
Define Dose
The amount of the toxic chemical absorbed, inhaled, injected or ingested
Define solubility
whether or not a chemical can dissolve in fat-solvents or water-solvents
Define Persistence
A term used to describe the longevity of a chemical hazard
Define bioaccumulation
chemical hazards that are stored in specific body cells or tissues at above average concentrations
Define biomagnification
level of chemical hazard increases as it moves up the food chain
Define antagonistic
reactions decrease toxicity
Define synergistic
interactions increase toxicity
Define response
the amount and type of health injury/damage caused from exposure to a hazard
Define acute response
immediate/short term , generally from high concentration
Define chronic response
long term, generally from low concentrations over long periods of time
List the different types of pathogens, and describe their prevalence
Bacteria, viruses, protozoa, parasites, fungus, etc
