Lecture 23 Flashcards
What are the 6 major pollutants?
Carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, Sulphur dioxide, SPM, ozone, and lead
Define Primary Pollutant
Pollutants emitted directly into the atmosphere in a already harmful form
Define secondary pollutant
pollutants formed in the atmosphere from the interaction of two or more primary pollutants
Describe Photochemical smog
smog created by the interaction of nitrogen oxides and VOC’s in the atmosphere under the influence of UV radiation
(worse in areas with higher temperature and sunlight)
Describe industrial/grey smog
smog formed from the burning of oil and coals leading to high levels of Sulphur dioxide, sulphuric acid and SPM
What treatment techniques are used to reduce air pollution
Tall smokestacks, filtration and taxation
What methods are used to test water quality
- Dissolved oxygen (measures amount of oxygen)
- Biological oxygen demand (amount of oxygen consumed by aquatic decomposers)
- Chemical analysis (to determine amount of dissolved chemical compounds)
- Turbidity ( a measurement of the amount of suspended particles)
