Lecture Material Flashcards
What is an agonist?
Any drug that binds to a receptor and activates the receptor
What is an antagonist?
Any drug that binds to a receptor and prevents the activation of the receptor
What does affinity mean?
How tightly the receptor binds to the drug
- good fit = good affinity
What are pharmacodynamics?
Actions of drugs on the body
(what effect does the drug have on the body)
(ACTUAL EFFECT)
What are pharmacokinetics?
Actions of the body on the drug
(what happens to the drug when it gets into the body)
(DRUGS MOVING THROUGH THE BODY)
What is nursing management of drug therapy?
The process of planning and implementing actions that will maximize the therapeutic effects and minimize the adverse effects of a drug
What are the five steps in the nursing process for medication administration?
- Assessment and identification
- Nursing diagnosis
- Plan of action
- Interventions
- Evaluation
What are the elements of core drug knowledge?
- Pharmacotherapeutics
- Pharmacokinetics
- Pharmacodynamics
- Contraindications and precautions
- Adverse effects
- Drug interactions
What is pharmacotherapeutics?
The therapeutic effect of the drug (aka the DESIRED EFFECT of the drug)
What do contraindications and precautions mean?
The reasons why we would NOT give the drug
What are adverse effects?
Side effects if we do give the drug
