Main sentence んですか
1) When the speaker guesses the reason or the cause of something and confirms whether he/she is correct.
A: 山口さん、えいごが上手ですね。海外に住んでいたんですか。
B: ええ、アメリカで勉強しました。
A: やまぐちさん、えいごがじょうずですね。かいがいにすんでいたんですか。
B: ええ、アメリカでべんきょうしました。
A: Ms. Yamaguchi, you speak English very well. Have you lived abroad?
B: Yes, I studied in America.

2) When the speaker asks for information about what he has seen/heard.
A: すてきなシャーツですね。どこで買ったんですか。
B: 原宿で買いました。
A: すてきなシャーツですね。どこでかったんですか。
B: はらじゅくでかいました。
A: What a nice shirt. Where did you buy it?
B: I bought it in Harajuku.

3) When the speaker asks the listener to explain the reason or the cause of what he has seen or heard.
どうして遅れたんですか。
どうしておくれたんですか。
