Lesson 3 & 4 Flashcards
Christianity and Psychology: enemies or allies?
Separate but equal
What is Tossed salad?
Christianity and Psychology melted together become subjective: There are no absolutes
What is Nothing buttery?
- Cross off psychology.
- If we do this we destroy the bridge to communication.
- We are also excluding everything that is truth that is secular (Ex. 1+1=2)
What is Discovered truth?
From the field of psychology and other things outside the word of God.
What is Revealed truth?
- Jesus is the final revelation of God (Hebrews)
- Its hard to have truth when there is no absolute truth.
- When you don’t have the word of God anchored then you have no absolute truth.
What is the science of Psychology?
- Science uses systematic observation and repeatable, verifiable findings.
- Psychology is the science of behavior and mental processes.
- Science assumes that natural phenomena are predictable or regular
Should a Christian do science?

How is Psychology Practiced?
The Scientific Method (Pt. 1)
Step 1: Ask a Question. Step 2: do some research. Step 3: formulate a hypothesis. Step 4: test with experimentation. Step 5: Record and Analyze observations. Step 6: draw a conclusion.
How is Psychology Practiced?
The Scientific Method (Pt. 2)
Known assumptions/limits.
Everyone has their own assumptions and limitations.
Empiricism.
Secular: experience is the sole source of knowledge.
Christian: experience is a source of knowledge which can be misinterpreted and must be measure by revealed truth.
Skepticism.
Different from cynicism.
Skeptics think critically and seek to have all the questions answered.
Can you always trust your intuition?
No!
How is Psychology Practiced?

Observation - leads to description.
- case studies
- surveys
- naturalistic observation.
Correlation - leads to prediction.
- a relationship between two variables (positive or negative)
- indicates the possibility of cause-effect but does not prove causation.
Experimentation - Discern cause & Effect.
- random assignment
- independent variable - variable the research changes.
- dependent variable - behavior or outcome being measured.
- experimental condition - subject exposed to the independent variable.
- control condition - subject not exposed to the independent variable.
Why didn’t God make us more like angels or perhaps to be pure spirits
