Known assumptions/limits.
Everyone has their own assumptions and limitations.

Empiricism.
Secular: experience is the sole source of knowledge.
Christian: experience is a source of knowledge which can be misinterpreted and must be measure by revealed truth.

Skepticism.
Different from cynicism.
Skeptics think critically and seek to have all the questions answered.

Observation - leads to description.

  • case studies
  • surveys
  • naturalistic observation.

Correlation - leads to prediction.

  • a relationship between two variables (positive or negative)
  • indicates the possibility of cause-effect but does not prove causation.

Experimentation - Discern cause & Effect.

  • random assignment
  • independent variable - variable the research changes.
  • dependent variable - behavior or outcome being measured.
  • experimental condition - subject exposed to the independent variable.
  • control condition - subject not exposed to the independent variable.
