  3. Post-Colonial Era: It is an on-going process, examine ways that Indigenous Peoples have of life moving forward within the constraints of the colonial oppression today.

  • Her name is Gahedi:yo (Kae-dee-yo) and it means nice fields/nice gardens
  • She was born in June, when the gardens are really nice
  • In her community they try to match names to personalities, birth season, or another family member’s name

Longhouse Family Structure:

A

-Those outside the longhouse cannot be in the longhouse family because they are of a different clan

-Father does not have decision making authority

-Uncle has more authority over decisions about the dad’s children because he is from that clan and those are that clan’s babies (ex: uncle is wolf clan, dad’s kids are wolf clan babies)

-Longhouses are organized according to clans

2.Men’s Chant / Naming Babies: gives men their time to claim spiritual space, make a connection with the creator, give space to introduce new citizens to the earth

3.Drum Dance: give thanks to every part of creation

4.Peach Stone Game: send prayers back to the sky world

What are some things to know about the rattle/feather dance?

A

-Made from turtle shell
-Hit the turtle shell is pushing all hopes and energy back to the sky world
-Big acknowledgement of the faith keepers
-To the people: we made it through the winter, we are here together

What are some things to know about the men’s chant/naming babies?

A

-So much focus on women, have to give the men some time and acknowledge them
-Women are so highly revered that men often get left out
-Name babies and introduce them to the community
-Tell everyone about the clan the baby is from, mention the dad’s name, say all the things they hope for the baby
-Put it into the community to uphold the good things for that child

What’s the significance to the Drum Dance?

A

-Speaker tells a part and then sings a song just for that piece
-Like the thanksgiving address but way bigger
-Everyone dancing is putting their energy into that idea

What’s the significance to the Peace Stone Game?

A

-2 colours and you can win based off of how many beans come up in the bowl

-Supposed to take your most prized possessions to the game and bet them

-If one side wins, they get all the prized possessions

-Belief that they will all be waiting for them when they die

-About understanding possessions and what we value the most

-About not caring about material goods
