Levers and equilbriums (from biomechanics glossary table) Flashcards
Lever
A rigid beam that rotates around an axis/fulcrum via the application of force.
First class lever
The axis is the central component that separates the force and resistance.
Second class lever
The resistance is the central component that separates the axis and the force.
Third class lever
The force is the central component that separates the axis and resistance.
Lever length
The length of the lever.
Equilibrium
A state in which all opposing forces are balanced.
Balance
The ability to control equilibrium
Stability
The resistance to the disruption of equilibrium.
Centre of gravity
An imaginary point in a body of matter where the total weight of the body may be thought to be concentrated.
Line of gravity
An imaginary vertical line passing from the centre of gravity of an object down to the ground.
Base of support
The area beneath an object or person that includes every point of contact that the object or person makes with the supporting surface.
