Who was Oscar Romero?
A
Oscar Romero was the Archbishop of San Salvador.
He was shot and killed on the 21st March 1980 after pleading with the soldiers of the army to stop murdering and exploiting the poor.
He was labelled a martyr, as as he had previously said ‘As a Christian, I do not believe in death without resurrection. If they kill me, I will rise again in the Salvadorian people.’
What Romero stood for and died for stood at the heart of liberation theology.

Liberation theology is a contextual theology which states that the heart of the Christian message is to bring spiritual and material justice and freedom to those who are oppressed.
