Liquids Flashcards
Define Pressure
Pressure is the amount of force per unit of area
What is the equation for pressure
Pressure = Force/Area
How is pressure measured
Because Pressure involves force and force is measured in Newtons
Pressure is measured in Pascals (Netwons per square meter)
Explain Pressure
Real World example
Pressure decreases when you exert the same force over a large area rather than a small one.
For example, when you stand on one leg, you create more pressure than standing on two legs. This is because your mass is spread out in less area, (your one foot) rather than more area (your two feet).
Define Liquid Pressure
Liquid pressure is the increase in pressure as you increase the depth of the liquid.
What is the equation for liquid pressure
Liquid Pressure = Weight Density x Depth
Explain Liquid Pressure
Real World example
The pressure of a liquid changes because the deeper you are, the more liquid that has to be supported.
For example, there is more pressure at the bottom of a swimming pool rather than the top. This is because the water at the bottom of the pool has to support the rest of the water at the top (pushing down).
Define Density
Density is the amount of mass per unit of volume
What is the equation for density
Density = Mass/Volume
Explain Density
Real World example
An object that has more mass and less area is more dense than an object with less mass and more area.
For example, a feather wouldnt be very dense because it doesn’t have a lot of mass and takes up a large space. But a penny would be dense because there’s more mass covering less area.
Define Buoyancy
