Allusion
brief and indirect reference to a person, place, thing or idea of historical, cultural, literary or political significance – “He was a real Romeo with the ladies.”
Alliteration
same consonant sounds in words coming together – Angry Alligators
Antagonist
the character in conflict with the Protagonist – Wolf in Red Riding Hood
Ballad
type of poetry or verse which was basically used in dance songs in the ancient France – Jack and Jill Went Up the Hill
Blank Verse
a literary device defined as un-rhyming verse written in iambic pentameter – Shakespeare
Character (static)
character that stays the same throughout the entire book – Tom Sawyer
Character (dynamic)
character that changes over the course of the book – Scout
Characterization
a literary device that is used step by step in literature to highlight and explain the details about a character in a story – Karen is bright, energetic, and helpful.
Climax
that particular point in a narrative at which the conflict or tension hits the highest point – Romeo challenges Tybalt to a duel after he killed Mercutio.
Conflict (internal)
conflict arises as soon as a character experiences two opposite emotions or desires; usually virtue or vice, or good and evil inside him – Hamlet’s internal conflict is main conflict in the book
Conflict (external)
marked by a characteristic involvement of an action wherein a character finds himself in struggle with those outside forces that hamper his progress – Jack & Ralph physically fight in Lord of the Flies
Dialect
the language used by the people of a specific area, class, district or any other group of people – Spanish
Drama
the specific mode of fiction represented in performance – Anything Goes
Essay
a short form of literary composition based on a single subject matter, and often gives personal opinion of an author – essays we write in school (Social Studies)
Falling Action
the winding up of the story, events and complications begin to resolve and the result of actions of the main characters are put forward – Harry Potter talks to Dumbledore in the infirmary, the banquet, and the train ride home
