Liver/Pancreatic Exocrine D/O Flashcards
Lobule
Functional unit of the Liver
Hepatocytes
liver cells produce and secrete bile
Bile
stimulates peristalsis and breaks down fats in the intestine
Canaliculus
Channels between hepatocytes drain bile into Common Bile Duct into duodenum and gall bladder
Hepatic Artery
carries oxygenated blood INTO liver
Portal Vein
- carries un-oxygenated blood (venous blood) high in nutrients from the GI tract into the liver
- provides energy for liver functions
Sinusoids
- capillaries between hepatocytes which carry blood to hepatic vein
- lined with Kupffer cells
Kupffer Cells
in sinusoids of liver acting as macrophages to destroy old WBCs, RBCs, and bacteria
Hepatic Vein
carries blood away from sinusoids to the Inferior Vena Cava back to lungs/heart for oxygenation
How many RBCs die every 5 seconds?
20 million!!
Main function of the liver?
Metabolism of bilirubin
Steps of metabolism of bilirubin
- RBCs breakdown in blood
- Heme breakdown produces bilirubin in blood (UNCONJUGATED)
- Bilirubin circulates through liver and is conjugated in hepatocytes (CONJUGATED)
- Bilirubin leaves liver as bile via bile (hepatic) duct
- Excreted into duodenum-converted to UROBILINOGEN
- Pooped out
Urobilinogen
gives stool brown color
Bile contains…
…water, electrolytes, bile acids, cholesterol and bilirubin
Adults produce how much bile per day?
400-800mL per day
