Localisation Flashcards
What is localisation?
The theory that specific areas of the brain are associated with particular physical and psychological functions.
What are the sections that the the brain is divided into?
- The Lymbic system
- Cerebellum
- Brain stem
- Cortex/Cerebrum
What does the lymbic system control?
Controls basic emotions and drives
What does the cerebellum control?
Coordinates & regulates muscular activity
What does the brain stem control?
Part of the central nervous system. Regulates body functions (eg: breathing, heart rate)
Connects the brain to the spinal cord.
What does the cortex/cerebrum control?
Responsible for higher-level processes. eg: learning, memory, thought, emotion, language, decision-making.
What are the 4 lobes?
- Frontal lobe
- Parietal lobe
- Temporal lobe
- Occipital lobe
What does the frontal lobe control?
Reasoning, motor control, emotion, language
What does the parietal lobe control?
Processes sensory information, some motor control
What does the the temporal lobe control?
Hearing, memory, emotion & some aspects of language
What does the occipital lobe control?
Contains primary visual cortex - interprets visual information
Where is the motor cortex located?
The frontal lobe
What does the motor cortex control?
Voluntarily movement
Is the motor cortex ipsilateral or contralateral?
Contralateral
What does contralateral mean?
Each hemisphere controls the opposite side of the body
