Lung Volume Flashcards
Tidal volume (TV)
normal breathing=500ml. controlled by pneumotaxic center. in nucleus parabrachialis in upper pons. limits inspiration: stretch receptor fire when lung ‘full’. fires herring-breuer reflex
Inspiratory reserve volume (irv)
forced inspiration=3000 ml. shuts off herring-breuer reflex. apneustic center in pons shuts off pneumotaxic center. allows deep breath, largest individual part of breathing
Expiratory Reserve volume (erv)
forced expiration=1100ml, controlled by rectus abdominus
residual volume (rv)
keeps lung from collapsing=1200 ml
inspiratory capacity
IRV + TV =3500ml
Functional Residual Capacity
ERV + RV =2300ml
Vital capacity
IRV + TV + ERV = IC +ERV = 4600ml
total lung volume
IRV + TV + ERV + RV =5800ml
dead space
air in pulmonary tree not involved with gas exchange (air in bronchi)
Respiration controlled by
dorsal motor nucleus of Vagus. Throat= Nucleus Ambiguous= CN9, 10, 11 = throat muscles (pharynx&larynx) “take a deep breath”
