Major Histocompatibility Complex Flashcards
What is the main function of MHC molecules?
To bind to antigens derived from pathogens and display them on the cell surface of the correct T cells.
What is attached to MHC?
The T cell receptor (TCR) at the top. MHC molecules are found on the surface of APCs.
What is the MHC?
Gene sequence that codes for the proteins that carry out their function.
How many classes of MHC are there?
3 classes
Do MHC molecules bind to B cells?
No but they can bind to NK cells.
Class 1 for one leg
Class 2 for two legs
Why is there 2 types of MHC?
MHC 1 present Intracellular antigen and kills the cell.
MHC 2?
Present extracellular antigen and promotes production of antibodies.
How are monoclonal antibodies produced?
- Fusion between immortal cell and specific antibody producing cell.
- Hybrid cells proliferate.
- Specific cell is selected and those cells are cultured.
What helps MHC molecules attach to the binding region of the TCR?
A co-receptor on the T cell such as CD4 and CD8.
