Why was living on the plains as a homesteader so difficult?

A

Lack of resources- Homes built from mud and had very little clean water
Weather- Extreme heat in the summer could cause fires and tornadoe were a problem
Unproductive land- You could not grow many crops on the land
Isolation- They were often miles from any towns

Why did homesteaders try and live on the plains?

A

1862 Homestead Act which said that if they lived on the land for 5 years and farmed it they would get 160 acres for free

Which factors contributed to the destruction of Native American culture 1877-1900 and what were the consequences of it?

A

Buffalo Hunters- They destroyed their nomadic culture as they now could not hunt buffalo
Friends of the Idian- They forced western practises upon Indian children
White Settlers- They fenced the areas so the buffalo were disrupted
US winning the wars- The US won the Indian wars and so they could not put up a fight against them
Consequences- Tribal land was given up, wounded knee in 1890 400 gohhost dancers surrendered , western culture was focred upon the Indians

Why was there so much bloodshed on the plains 1861-1877 and what where the consequences of it?

A

Little Crows War (1862 Dakota Sioux) - They had horrible treatment on the plains with many starving, they killed 500 settlers so were attacked by the army
Red Clouds War (1866-68 Lakota Sioux)- The Government broke the Fort Laramie treaty (1851),they wanted revenge for the Sand Creek Massacre,They refused to stop attacking miners who were destroying their land
Consequences- They are forced onto reservtions

In the North-Discrimintation about having to fight in a war for black lives and when they did join the army they were used as canon foder
In the South- Limited oportunities and they had de jure freedom as some still worked on plantations but were payed
