Amniotic fluid
Pale, straw-colored fluid in which fetus floats. Serves as cushion, and helps maintain body temp
Ballottement
Rebounding of the fetus against the examiners finger on palpation. When the examiner taps the cervix the fetus will float up and then float back down
Chadwick’s sign
Violet coloration of the mucous membranes of the cervix, vagina, and vulva. Occurs at about 4 weeks due to the increased vascularity
Embryo
Fetal development day 15 to about 8 weeks or until measures 3cm
Goodell’s sign
softening of the cervix that occurs at the start of the 2nd month of gestation.
Gravida
Gravida 1 for sirst preg, and gravida 2 second preg and so on.
Infant
A human from 28 days until the 1st Bday
Lecithin-to-sphingomyelin (L/S) ratio
the two compartment ratio of amniotic fluid, used for predicting fetal lung maturity. Normal L/S ratio is 2:1
lochia
discharge from the uterus that consist of blood from the vessels of the placental site and debris from the decidua; last 2-6 weeks after delivery
Nagele’s rule
determine the expected date of delivery assuming that the mother has a 28-day menstrual cycle
newborn

parity
number of pregs that have reached viablilty regardless of live or still birth
placenta
The organ that provides for the exchange of nutrients and waste products between fetus and the mother. Also produces hormones to maintain pregnancy. Develops in the 3rd month of pregger
quickening
maternal perception of fetal movement for the 1st time
surfactant
phospholipid that is necessary to keep the fetal lung from collapsing
