Measures of Location and Spread Flashcards
What is a measure of Loacation?
A single value which describes a position in a data set
If the measure of location is in the centre of the data set, what is it called?
It is called the measure of central tendency.
When is the mode used?
When data is qualitative, either with a single mode or two.
Not very informative if each value occurs once.
When is the Median used?
Used for quantitative data
Usually used when there are extreme values, as they do not affect it.
When is the Mean used?
Used for quantitative data and uses all pieces of the data.
Where is the lower quartile in the data set?
It is a quarter through the data set.
Where is the Upper quartile in the data set?
It is the value three quarters through the set.
When using interpolation, what is assumed?
Variables are evenly distributed through each class.
What is the range?
The difference between the largest and smallest values in the set.
What is the Inter quartile range?
The diff. between the upper and lower quartiles.
What are measures of spread sometimes called?
Measures of dispersion or measures of variation.
What is the interpercentile range?
The difference between The values of two different percentiles.
