Mechanical systems Flashcards
What to mechanisms do
Transform an input motion and force into an output one
What are mechanisms designed for
To gain mechanical advantages to make something easier to do. This usually involves changing the magnitude and direction of the applied force
What are the 4 types of motion
Linear - moving one way in a straight line
Reciprocating - moving backwards and forwards in a straight line
Oscillating - moving backwards and forwards in an arc
Rotary - moving in a circle
What do leavers do and how
Move and lift loads by rotating about stationary points called fixed pivots
What is the order of first order leaves
Load, pivot, effort
What is the order of second order leavers
Pivot, load effort
What is the order of third order leavers
Load, effort, pivot
What can linkages do
Change the magnitude of the force and the direction of motion
What are the 2 types of linkages
-Push/ pull linkages
-Bell crank
What does a bell crank do
Change the direction of force through 90 degrees
What do gear trains do
Transmit or change rotary motion
What can gear trains be used for
-direction of motion
-magnitude of input force
What’s the equation for gear ratio
no. of teeth on the driven gear / no. of teeth on the driver gear
What’s the equation for otuput speed
speed of driver gear (input speed) / gear ratio
What can pulleys help with
Lifting loads
