media theories Flashcards
Steve Neale Theory
Neale believes that films of a type genre (romance or horror) should be similar so the audience know it is a horror film or romance, but also should feature that are different, to keep an audience interested. This is his theory of repetition and difference.
Christian Metz Theory
Christian Metz [French film theorist]= genre theory
-He believed that genres go through a cycle of stages during their life time. These were:
>Experimental stage
>Classic stage
>Parody stage
>Deconstruction stage
what is the deconstruction stage in Metz Theory
where the genre starts to evolve and merge with others.
meaning the codes and conventions of the ‘classic’ documentary genre are less ‘clear-cut’ therefore meaning that some of the rules can be broken.
This results in a much wider variety of how films/ short films and programs can be made.
Todorov Narrative Theory
about how the narration in a story is created.
-narratives moved forward in a chronological order with one action following after another.
- have a clear beginning, middle and end.
Laura Mulvey theory
females in films and tv programs become sexualised throughout, for example showing legs, arms, neck becoming the passive subjects, meant to represent male desire.
-many Marilyn Monroe films
Earp and Katz theory
the increasing amount of violent male characters in media has consequences in real-life society.
for example GTA impacts young children’s mind therefore increasing drug and violence .
