Medical Imaging Flashcards
Radiography
x-rays - bones appear white, hollow structures appear black, and intermediate density such as skin and muscle appear grey
Contrast X-ray
uses a medium that is injected, taken orally or rectally to make hollow structures visible
Used to image blood vessels, urinary system, and gastrointestinal tract
MRI
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Shows fine details of soft tissue
Used to detect tumors, artery clogs, measures blood flow
CT
Computed Tomography
X-ray beam traces arc around a section of body
Screening for cancers
Ultrasound
high frequency sound waves produced by a handheld wand reflected off body tissue
image produced called a sonogram
CCTA
Coronary (cardiac) computed tomography angiography scan
Contract injected into the vein and beta blocker to decrease heart rate - used to find blockages in blood vessels
PET
Positron Emission Tomography
Used to study physiology of the body structure such as metabolism in the brain or heart by injecting positrons into the body
Endoscopy
visual exam of inside of body organs or cavities
Radionuclide Screening
Radioactive substance introduced through IV carried to tissue
Intense color = high tissue activity
less intense color = low tissue activity
SPECT
Single photon emission computed tomography
Studying brain, heart, lungs, and liver
