Q

What occurs in the S phase (interphase) in meiosis 1?

A

Interphase- cell prepares for division

G1- cell grows and makes necessary proteins.

S-phase- replication of DNA

G2- further growth

A
  • chromatids pulled to opposite poles.

- this creates four groups of chromosomes

16
Q

What is crossing over?

A

Homologous chromosomes exchange genetic material.

A chromatid from the maternal chromosome twists around the paternal chromosome and they connect forming a chiasmata.

This forms different combinations of alleles.

17
Q

At what stage does independent assortment occur in meiosis?

A

Metaphase

18
Q

What is independent assortment?

A

When during the metaphase the chromosomes will line up along the equator of the cell in a random order.

This will cause different combinations of chromosomes to end up with each gamete.
