mendelian genetics Flashcards
Alleles are represented on paper by letters. What do uppercase letters indicate? what about lowercase letters?
uppercase = DOMINANT lowercase = RECESSIVE
what is an allele ?
an alternate form of a gene
How can a persons phenotype be affected ?
alleles or environment or dominance
what is QQ genotype ?
homozygous dominant
what is Aa genotype ?
heterozygous
what are homologous chromosomes ?
two chromosomes (one from mom and one from dad) that have the same length, overall appearance and genes although the alleles may differ
what is it called when a pair of alleles are the same ? when they’re different ?
homozygous / heterozygous
what is the relationship between genes and proteins ?
genes provide instructions for a cell to make a certain protein
where are sex linked genes located?
sex chromsomes
what are the genes on the Y chromosomes responsible for ?
male characteristics
Difference between a carrier and a person who HAS a genetic disorder?
a carrier doesn’t show symptoms but can pass on disorder to its offspring
what is incomplete dominance ?
incomplete dominance is when two characteristics are blended; between two homozygous phenotypes. if a red and white flower makes a pink flower.
what is co dominance ?
neither is fully dominant or recessive; both is shown and fully expressed in their own ways. for example, cow prints
