Metabolism Flashcards
Name the 8 common types of enzymes in biology that you have covered in class.
1) Kinase
2) Phosphorylase
3) Phosphatase
4) Dehydrogenase
5) Mutase
6) Isomerase
7) Hydratase
8) Synthase
What type of reaction does Kinase catalyse?
Kinase (K) catalyses the phosphoryl transfer from one molecule (usually ATP) to another.
What type of reaction does Phosphorylase catalyse?
Phosphorylase (P’lase) catalyses the covalent addition of inorganic phosphate (Pi) to a molecule.
What type of reaction does Phosphatase catalyse?
Phosphatase (P’tase) catalyses the cleavage of a phosphate to yield the dephosphorylated product and Pi.
What type of reaction does Dehydrogenase catalyse?
Dehydrogenase (DH), catalyses an oxidation/reduction reaction commonly using NADH/NAD+, NADPH/NADP+ or FADH2/FAD as cofactors.
What type of reaction does Mutase catalyse?
Mutase (M) catalyses the shift of a phosphoryl group from one atom to another within the same molecule.
What type of reaction does Isomerase catalyse?
Isomerase (I) catalyses the conversion of one isomer to another.
What type of reaction does Hydratase catalyse?
Hydratase catalyses the addition/removal of water.
What type of reaction does Synthase catalyse?
Synthase catalyses the synthesis of a product.
