Metals Flashcards
What do metals do
Metals play a integral role in the manufacturing of vechicles, buildings and household products, ranging from the shard to keys to houses.
What are the two groups metals are categorized into?
Ferrous - Contains Iron and are magnetic
Non ferrous - Does not contain iron and are not magnetic
Ferrous
- Contain iron
- Magnetic, helps to sort material when recycling
- Carbon content make it prone to corrosion when exposed
- Properties, Hardness, malleability, related to the carbon content
Non ferrous
- Doesn’t contain iron, this makes them desirable due to malleable properteis and resistant to corrosion
- The majority are not magnetic, good for electronic devices and wiring
- After steel, aluminium is the most widely used metal
Ferrous materials
- Cast iron
- Low carbon steel
- High carbon steel
Non ferrous metals
- Aluminium
- Copper
- Zinc
What is an alloy.
Metals formed by mixing together two or more metals to produce a new metal that has improved characteristics and properties
Adjust their mechanical and physical properties in order to produce a more suitable material for a particular porpose
They can be boyh ferrous and non ferrous depending on the pure metal included
