metals and there uses Flashcards
what causes corrosion?
iron or tin being exposed to water and air
how can you protect against corrosion?
galvanizing- a layer of tin or steel protecting the metal from being exposed to air or water
or being protected by a layer of paint, powder or oil.
how does salt increase the rate of corrosion?
brings in more dissolved ion’s into the area
name the properties of metals
good conductors, electricity, shiny, high melting point, malleable
what is a pure metal?
metals that are made of one kind of element. all the atoms are the same size and ahve the same properties.
why are alloy’s stronger than pure metals?
because of the different sizes of atoms causing distortion, makes it difficult for the layers of atoms to slide over each other. making it stronger and less malleable.
advantages of alloys
- increased hardness
- prevents corrosion/rusting
- smooth appearance
what are group one metals?
the most reactive kind.
