How to take metformin?

A

Taken up to 3x per day usually 500mg dose (should specify frequency on station - take in morning if one dose)

Side effects of metformin?

A

GI upset - vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, discomfort

Can cause blood to become a bit acidic (monitored for)

Monitoring requirements for metformin?

A

U&E’s
- Before starting
- Annually thereafter at diabetes check ups
- 6 monthly if established kidney disease
