Emtotional characteristics of phobias
Fear which is consistent
With anxiety and panic likely to be excessive and unreasonable
Feelings are cued by the presence for specific object or situation
Behavioural characteristics of phobias
Avoidance - immediate response is to avoid it
Stress response activated - fight, flight or freeze - they do this because the predator may think that the prey is dead
Phobias can sometimes affect their day to day living
Cognitive characteristics of phobias
Selective attention - individuals find it hard to look away from stimulus
Irrational beliefs - patients incorrect perception as to what the danger posed actually is
Cognitive distortion - patient can’t perceive that stimulus accurately
Emotional characteristics of depression
Sadness - feeling empty
Feel worthless and experience low self esteem
Loss of interest in hobbies and activities
Have lack of control
Anger directed to themselves or others
Behavioural characteristics of depression
Reduced energy, sense of tiredness and wish to sleep all the time
Some are the opposite and they are restless, they may tear their skin
Have reduced appetite
Cognitive characteristics of depression
Having negative self concept
Have a negative view of the world - everything for the individual will end up badly
They have negative expectations of their life
Expectations can be self - fulfilling
Emotional characteristics of OCD
Anxiety and distress
Behaviour can be excessive therefore it can be embarrassing for the individual
Germs - riser feelings of disgust
Cognitive characteristics of OCD
Person may not want to share with others as it can be embarassing
Ideas - there are germs everywhere
Doubts - the worry of looking at something that has been overlooked
Having images
These are seen as uncontrollable which creates anxiety
Behavioural characteristics of OCD
Compulsive behaviours to reduce anxiety
They are repeated - hand washing or checking
