Flashcards in Microscopy Deck (14):
1

What is the definition of magnification?

When something is enlarged.

2

What is the definition of resolution?

The ability to distinguish between 2 objects clearly. A higher resolution means the image is clearer.

3

What is the formula to find the magnification?

Image Size divided by Real Size.

4

What is the formula to find the Image size?

Magnification times the Real Size.

5

What is the formula for finding the Real Size?

Image size divided by the Magnification.

6

What is the formula to find the Total Magnification?

Eyepiece Lens Magnification time the Objective Lens Magnification.

7

What are the units for Millimetres?

mm

8

What are the units for Micrometers?

μm

9

What are the units for Nanometres?

nm

10

What are the units for Picometers?

pm

11

When were Light Microscopes invented?

In the 1590s.

12

How do Light Microscopes work?

They work by passing light through the specimen. They let us see things like nuclei and chloroplasts and we can also use them to study living cells.

13

When were Electron Microscopes invented?

In the 1930s.

14

How do Electron Microscopes work?

They use electrons rather than light. Electron Microscopes have a higher magnification and resolution than Light Microscopes so they let us see much smaller things in more detail like the internal structure of mitochondria and chloroplasts.
