How did the treaty of Westphalia give rise to states? Why did states become nation states?
Bc the holy roman emperor was broken. They became nation states bc they became their own sovereign state
What is state sovereignty?
Ability for a state to have legal authority and responsibility of an independent state to govern and regulate its political affairs w out foreign interference
What is realism? What level do they believe in?
It’s about piower and security. They need power to get security. Focuses on human selfish nature as individuals. This goes w the individual bc of the focus on individuals
What is liberalism? What level analysis?
Promoting Indic rights, freedom and equality, Delacruz: free trade and commerce, religion free. Could probably go with international level bc of the free trade and individual bc of rights
Neorealist
Both the state and systematic lvl
Neorealism states that the world is in perpetual state of anarchy caused by global relations. This anarchy causes Individual states to act in their own self interest through self helo
Constructivism and what level of analysis
Seeing the world from a nature of reality and knowledge: iffers diff explanations to why and event has occurred. Looks at the individual level bc of the different thoughts

- has competitive advantage in production of value added goods
- accepted ideology
- expected to provide certain public goods such as security, or commercial and financial stability
What are two level games?
Demonstrating interactions with foreign diplomacy (focus on state interest and solve foreign issue)
Levels of analysis
Individual; focuses on individual, their pov, their belief, their education, is personality
State; focuses on how states would react to a situation bc of their expectations and national interest
Systematic: looks at entire international system as a whole and how they act in response to one another
Diplomacy
The interaction of two or more states in an attempt to achieve respective national goals
Types of coercive diplomacy
Ultimatum: a final demand of Yerma and conditions and if not agreed, will end in retaliation
Carrot and stick; the possibility of incentive that promises benefit and the promise of threat and punishment as a result of non compliance
Turning the screw; gradually applying coercive pressure instead of sudden, decisive militaristic attacks in order to achieve compliance
Know security dilemma and what happens as a result of this dilemma
When one country builds up militaristic defense for the sake of being prepared and another country perceives it as a threat
- result; decrease in security of all parties involves tensions rising
Principles of liberalism and and realism
Liberalism; equality and liberty, individual rights, private property
Realism; based on survival, self help bc humans are naturally selfish
Anarchy and methods of self help
Anarchy; world lacks supreme gov
Self help methods;
- aggressor: attack in hope that your efforts will result in a growth of power, increasing national security
- ally; band with other nation states to build security
Do nothing
Bargaining model of war and how realist or liberalist would view it
BM: a representation of the potential costs and gains of war between two states
Realist view; states will often times choose action that falls within the area that will provide most gain
