Q

when would we use convergence

A

if we are acting as individuals and we want approval we will converge

11
Q

when would we use divergence

A

if we are acting as a representative of a group and there is a need for distinctness then we will diverge

16
Q

what is breadth

A

the range and amount of how much you are willing to share

17
Q

law of reciprocity

A

the you tell me, I tell you concept

18
Q

minimax principle

A

minimizing the cost and maximizing the benefits of the relationship

19
Q

Expectancy Violation Theory

A

Held idea about how people should react to a certain situation but when they react differently it violates your held expectancy

20
Q

Core concepts of EVT

A

Expectancy, violation valence, and communicator reward valence

21
Q

expectancy concept in EVT

A

predicting what will happen

22
Q

violation valence concept in EVT

A

you will add a positive or negative value to the unexpected behavior

23
Q

communicator reward valence concept in EVT

A

you evaluate the person who committed the violence and decide it if should be rewarded

24
Q

Uncertainty Reduction Theory

A

experiencing uncertainty in interpersonal relationships

25
Q

what are the strategies used to reduce uncertainty

A

passive, active, interactive, extractive

26
Q

passive strategy in URT

A

observing others from a distance

27
Q

active strategy in URT

A

asking or involving a 3rd party

28
Q

interactive strategy in URT

A

having a face to face discussion to reduce uncertainty

29
Q

extractive strategy in URT

A

searching or involving the internet to reduce uncertainty

30
Q

8 truths(axioms) about uncertainty

A

verbal communication, nonverbal warmth, information seeking, self disclosure, reciprocity, liking, shared networks, similarity

31
Q

what is true about the axioms

A

when the level of them go up then the uncertainty will go do but that is not always the case

32
Q

what are the goals of the interaction in regards to URT

A

to reduce uncertainty or maximize a relationship outcome

33
Q

theories that relate to each other

A

social penetration and uncertainty reduction theory= the goal to reduce uncertainty is to maximize a relationship outcome similar to the minimax principle in SPT to maximize their benefits. law of reciprocity is similar to the axiom of reciprocity

CAT and social penetration theory= one way to converge is through discourse management which is when you are selective of the topics to discuss. this relates to the breadth of social penetration which is when you chose what you want to share and what you don’t want to share

34
Q

Message plan in URT

A

action plan to achieve the relationship goal

35
Q

Face Negotiation Theory

A

How we form and maintain our self images, through the lens of intercultural communication, reputation management and conflict management

36
Q

we form and maintain self image through what cultures

A

collectivist culture and individualistic culture

37
Q

Collectivist culture

A

were people identify with a larger group. values collective needs and goals as a whole; We-identity

38
Q

individualistic culture

A

people look out for themselves. value individual needs not a group as a whole; I-identity

39
Q

ways to deal with conflict management

A

avoiding, compromising, obliging, integrating, competing, emotional expression, passive aggressive, 3rd party help
