A

A revolt in Cuba - against Spanish Rule - by Cuban nationalists (led by Jose Marti) - in 1895.

Why did the US involve themselves in Cuba’s issue?

A
  • The exportation of tobacco and sugar from Cuba to the US was imperative to both countries markets and thus with Cuba being only 90 miles away from the US it appeared logical to support the revolt.
  • The US also felt war with Spain would permit bases in the Pacific (Hawaii, Philippines - islands under Spanish rule).
