Minerals Unit 1 Flashcards
Elements
Pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by ordinary chemical means
What is a mineral
I naturally formed, inorganic solid that has a definite crystalline structure
Crystals
A solid who’s atoms, ions, or molecules are arranged a definite pattern
Silicate minerals
The mineral that contains a combination of silicon, oxygen, and one or more metals
Non-silicate minerals
A mineral that does not contain compounds of silicon and oxygen
Classes of non-silicate minerals
Native elements, oxides, carbonates, sulfates, halides, sulfides
Luster
The way in which a mineral reflects light
Streak
The color of the powder of a mineral
Cleavage
The splitting of the mineral long smooth, flat surfaces
Fracture
The manner in which a mineral breaks on either curved a irregular surfaces
Hardness
A measure of the ability of a mineral to resist scratching
Density
The ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of a substance
Special properties of some minerals
Florescence, chemical reaction, optical properties, magnetism, taste, radioactivity
How minerals form
Minerals form of earths crust. There are different environments that determine the minerals properties.
Ore
A natural material whose concentration of economically valuable minerals is high enough for the mineral to be mined profitably
