What is mitosis?
The splitting and replication of cells to create more cells
What happens before mitosis?
Interphase
What occurs in Interphase?
The centrioles are copied and the DNA is copied into chromosomes
What is the first stage of mitosis?
Prophase
What occurs during Prophase?
Chromosomes are condensed, centrioles move to opposite sides, spindle fibers are grown, nuclear envelope breaks down
What is the second stage of mitosis?
Metaphase
What occurs during Metaphase?
The chromosomes move to the middle and attach to spindle fibers
What is the third stage of mitosis?
Anaphase
What occurs during Anaphase?
The chromosomes are pulled apart by the spindle fibers, move to opposite sides
What is the fourth stage of mitosis?
Telophase
What occurs during Telophase?
The nuclear envelope reforms and the cell stretches apart
What is the final stage of mitosis?
Cytokinesis
What occurs during Cytokinesis?
The cell splits in two
