elevate arm above heart to reduce swelling, ice may be used first 24-48hrs, use arm sling when ambulating, elevate affected leg on several pillows to reduce swelling, use ice for first 24hrs, explain purpose and procedure for cast, heat felt immediately after wet cast applied on plaster cast, do not cover a new plaster cast, allow air-drying and use palm of hand to handle, should be able to insert a finger between cast and skin, immediately report any increases in drainage or change in integrity of cast, after swelling cast may become too loose and need replaced
