Module 1 Flashcards
what is a “population of interest”
the entire collection of individuals you are interested in (not the sample)
what is a Parameter
a numerical summary that describes a characteristic of the population
(number that describes a population)
what is a statistic
a numerical summary that describes a characteristic of the sample
what are the 5 W’s and H
Who = who are you collecting data from
What = what characteristic/variable are you measuring
Why = what is the reason for collecting data?
When & Where = knowing when and where the data is collected files info about he context
How = how are you going to collect the data? how is the variable being measured?
What is a Categorical (qual) variable and what are he two subgroups
A categorical variable is where you place the subject into one of several groups or categories
- Nominal & Ordinal
what is the difference between a Nominal Category and a Ordinal Category
Nominal = the levels have no order
eg. what sport do you play (soccer, basketball, hockey, etc.)
Ordinal = the levels have an order
eg. what letter grade did you receive? ( A+ A A- B+ B B- C+ C…. etc. )
What is Numerical (quant) variables and what are the two subgroups
measures a number amount in a subject (uses numbers instead of categories)
Discrete and Continuous
what is the difference between a discrete variable and continuous variable
discrete can only date on distinctive values (1, 2, 3, 4, …) and continuous can make on any value given in an interval (1.2, 2, 3.3, 3.9, 4.1, 5….)
