STEP 1: is the defendant’s conduct the “but for” cause?
STEP 2: is the actual result w/in contemplation of w/in risk of which he should have been aware?
- if “no,” still culpable if:
1) actual result differs from the risked result only in the respect that a different person or property is injured; or
2) actual result differs only in that the injury or harm would have been more serious or extensive that that ultimately cause; or
3) actual result involves the same kind of injury as the probable result and is not too remote or accidental
