Module 8 Flashcards
gene
segment of DNA that codes for a protein
dominant
the trait or gene that is expressed
recessive
the gene or trait that is hidden
allele
a version or variation of a gene
homozygous
an identical pair of alleles
heterozygous
two different alleles
genotype
the genetic make-up pair alleles, the combination of alleles
phenotype
the actual physical expression of the gene
Law of segregation
pairs of alleles segregate equally into gametes during Meiosis l
Law of independent assortment
alleles of two (or more) different genes assort independently in gamete formation
Autosomal
genes that are located on autosomes
autosomal recessive inheritance
two copies of the recessive allele are required
autosomal dominant inheritance
only one dominant allele necessary to cause a phenotype
Incomplete dominance
characterized by an intermediate phenotype (red flower + white flower = pink flower)
Codominance
both alleles are expressed in heterozygous individuals (AB blood type, striped white and red flower)
