Motion Flashcards
What is Momentum
The linear momentum of a body is the product of its mass and its velocity.
The Law of Conservation of Linear Momentum
The law of conservation of linear momentum states that, in the absence of external forces, the total momentum of a system of bodies is constant.
What are the types of Collisions?
- Elastic : kinetic energy are conserved and do not change form.
Eg. Objects continue moving after collision. - Inelastic: kinetic energy is not conserved; it changes form and is lost as heat or sound.
What are Newton’s three laws of motion?
Newton First Law of Motion
A body will continues in its state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by external or resultant force.
Newton’s Second Law of Motion
The rate of change of the momentum of a body is directly proportional to the applied force and takes place in the direction of the force.
Force = Mass x Acceleration F =m x a a = acceleration ,m= mass
Newton’s Third Law of Motion
If a body A exert a force on body B then body B will exert an equal and opposite force on body A
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
