motor generatirs trandpsfroersm Flashcards
how does an electric motor work
an electric motor has a force induced on one side causing it to go upwards and a force induced on the other side causing it to move downwards .
how does a conductor form potential difference
electrons within it move from one side to the opposite
what will happen if a conductor is connected to a circuit
a current will flow, and this current will produce a magnetic field. the direction of the new field will be the opposite as the first field
how do electric generators work
- a turbine spins thr coil of wire
- this movement of wire causes the magnetic field to be cut
- this generates pd
if the coil is connected to a circuit, an alternating current will flow
what is an alternating current
current that is constantly changing in direction, so it’s magnetic field also constantly chnages
what does an alternating current create in a coil
a changing magnetic field
how do transformers work
- an alternating current in the first coil creates a changing magnetic field
- this magnetic field cuts through the secondary coil
- a current is then induced in the secondary coil which is also alternating
what would happen if there were more turns on the secondary coil
a step UP transformer is produced.
voltage is INCREASED induced a LARGER pd, less current tho
what would happen if there were less turns on the secondary coil
what goes with dc
split ring
what goes with ac
slip ring
compare an alternator with a dynamo
- dynamo is a dc generator, alternator is an ac generator
- an alternator has alternating pd, dynamo doesn’t
- alternator uses slip ring, dynamo uses split ring
