Mountains Flashcards
South Saskatchewan River
- 1,392 km long
- Heavily utilized water source in Northern Alberta and Saskatchewan
- Major tributary to Saskatchewan River, ultimately discharging in Hudson Bay
- Mean Flow (280 m3/s) controlled by dams and reservoirs
- Flows through agriculturally productive region and is prone to periodic droughts and floods.
Mountain Legacy Project
long term study of landscape, ecological and cultural change in mountain region of western Canada. Recreate images form same exact locations since 1996 based on pictures from the past.
Climate Change impacts on Alpine Regions
- Accelerated Glacial Melt: More immediate water availability but threatens long-term water supplies
- Water Supply: Change in snowmelt affects volume, seasonality and predictability of water flow in rivers and streams.
Lowlands impact from Climat Change
Agriculture: Change in water availability can affect crop production affecting food security and economic stability for whole regions
Hydropower: Reduced predictability of water flow can affect energy prod and supply
Drinking Water: Changes in quality of water from Alpine areas can affect urban and rural people health.
Increased Risk of Natural Disasters: Unpredictability of water flow can create avalanche, landslides, droughts, etc..
