Movement Of Molecules Flashcards
Diffusion
The spreading of gasses widely. #When you spray deodorant in the air and it disperses in the air.
Simple Diffusion
When small, non-polar (lipid soluble not soluble in water) molecules passes through a lipid bilayer.
State the major fluid compartments in the body
1- Intracellular Fluid Compartments (ICF): Found in Cells.
2- Extracellular Fluid Compartment (ECF): Plasma and Interstitial Fluid (IF) (the fluid between the tissues).
Facilitated Diffusion
Spontaneous passive transport of molecules through a membrane via integral proteins.
Osmosis
When molecules pass from a less concentrated solution to a more concentrated one through a semi-permeable membrane.
Active Transport
The movement of molecules or ions across a cell membrane into a region of higher concentration. Assisted by enzymes and requires energy.
Endocytosis
When molecules are taken in by a cell through its membrane forming a vacuole around it.
Exocytosis
When a cell throws waste material out of itself through a vacuole fusing with the cell membrane.
Concentration Gradient
Is how fast the molecules diffuse across the membrane.
