Mr. Coleman's 112 Science Flashcards
Crystal
A crystal is a solid with a regular shape. The particles inside the crystal are arranged in a regular pattern.
Saturated solution
A saturated solution is one that contains as much dissolved solute as possible at a given temperature.
Solubility
The solubility of a substance is the mass of it (in grams) that will dissolve in 100 grams of solvent at a fixed temperature.
Solubility curve
A solubility curve is a graph showing how the solubility of a substance varies with temperature.
Crystallisation
Crystallisation is the formation of crystals when a hot saturated solution is cooled.
Filtration
Filtration is a method of separating an insoluble solid from a liquid using a material that allows the liquid to pass through but not the solid.
Filtrate
The filtrate is the liquid that has been filtered, that is, the liquid that has passed through the filter paper.
Mixture
A mixture consists of two or more different substances mingled with each other but not chemically combined.
Evaporation
Evaporation is the changing of a liquid to a gas at the surface of the liquid.
Rock Salt
Mixture of sodium chloride, sand, and dirt.
Distillation
Distillation is the vaporising of a liquid by boiling it and then condensing the vapour by cooling it.
Distillate
The distillate is the purified liquid produced by condensation from a vapour during distillation, that is, the product of distillation.
Paper chromatography
Paper chromatography is a method of separating mixtures of substances in solution.
The solvent in which the substances are dissolved is passed along a length of paper and the dissolved substances separate out on the paper.
Chromatogram
A chromatogram is the strip of paper on which the parts of a mixture have been separated by chromatography.
