Mr Utterson Flashcards
” If he be Mr Hyde,” he had thought, “I shall be Mr Seek”
Chapter 2, has a curiosity streak in his character. Ironically curiosity also drives Jekyll but it ends in his downfall unlike Utterson.
The man seems hardly human! Something troglodytic, shall we say?
Chapter 2, Hyde is more animal than human
If i ever read Satan’s signature upon a face, it is on that of your new friend.
Chapter 2, He is not human, hinting at the horrific acts of Hyde and his link to the supernatural/potion
Mr Utterson the lawyer was a man of a rugged countenance, that was never lighted by a smile; cold, scanty and embarrassed in discourse; backwards in sentiment;lean, long, dusty ,dreary, and yet somehow loveable
Chapter 1, first words, utterson is the first character to be introduced
‘I incline to Cains heresy,’ he used to say quaintly:’I let my brother go to the devil in his own way’
Chapter 1, shows utterson is a typical victorian man who doesn’t feel compelled to impose his values on others. Implies when cain killed abel, cain let abel go to the devil (dig at religion), foreshadows text as it’s what he does. Only gets involved when he’s forced to, it’s a juxtaposition.
