All voluntary controlled muscles of the body
Origin
Attachment of a muscle’s tendon to a stationary bone
Proximal
Insertion
Attachment of muscle’s other tendon to a movable bone
Distal
Action of muscle
Main movements that occur when muscle contracts
Reverse muscle action
During specific movements of the body the actions are reversed
The position of origin and insertion are flipped
Levers
Rigid structure that can move around a fixed point called a fulcrum
Effort
Causes movement
Force exerted by muscular contraction
Load/resistance
Opposes movement
Weight of body part moved or resistance body is trying to overcome
Mechanical advantage
Load is closer to fulcrum and effort is further from fulcrum, this results in small effort required to move a large load over a small distance
Mechanical disadvantage
Load is further from fulcrum and effort is applied closer to fulcrum, thus a relatively large effort is required to move small load
First class lever
Fulcrum is between load and effort
Mechanical advantage or disadvantage
2nd class lever
Load is between fulcrum and effort
Always mechanical advantage
3rd class lever
Effort between fulcrum and load
Most common in body
Always mechanical disadvantage
Fascicles
All muscle fibers are parallel to one another
Parallel
Fascicles are parallel to longitudinal axis of muscle and terminate at either end in flat tendons
Fusiform
Fascicles are nearly parallel to longitudinal axis of muscle and terminate in flat tendons
Circular
Fascicles are in concentric circular arrangement, form sphincter muscles that enclose orifice
Triangular
Fascicles spread over broad area converge at thick tendons
Pennate
Short fascicles in relation to total muscle length
Tendons extend nearly entire length of muscle
Unipennate
Fascicles arranged on only 1 side of tendon
Bipennate
Fascicles arranged on both sides of centrally positioned tendons
Multipennate
Fascicles attach obliquely from many directions to several tendons
Prime mover
Aka agonist
Contracts to cause action
Antagonist
Stretches and yields to effects of prime mover
