My Deck 4 Flashcards
Tensile Force
The force when two surfaces pull apart from one another.
Midaxillary caliper measurement site
Measure the fold in a horizontal line at the point where a vertical line from the mid axilla (middle of armpit) intersects with a horizontal line level with the sternum. Pull the skinfold in a vertical direction.
Sesamoid bones
Small and round. Found in the joints and within tendons, they reinforce and protect tendons from stress and wear and tear.
Dorsiflexion
Flexion of the foot upward (superiorly)
Marfan syndrome
a genetic disorder affecting connective tissue and that commonly affects the heart, eyes, blood vessels, and skeleton.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Endoplasmic reticulum with ribosomes attached.
Oxidative Phosphorylatio
The energy-producing process that occurs in mitochondria in the presence of oxygen.
Lysosomes
An organelle filled with digestive enzymes that breaks down materials the cell has absorbed.
Pituitary Gland Endocrine Function
Pituitary hormones control other parts of the endocrine system, including the thyroid gland, adrenal glands, ovaries, and testes.
Respiratory Quotient
A method of determining the fuel mix being used; a way to measure the relative amounts of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins being burned for energy.
Inspiration
Breathing air into the lungs.
Agility
The ability to accelerate, decelerate, stabilize, and change direction with proper posture.
Suprailliac caliper measurement site
Measure about halfway between the navel and the top of the hip bone. This should be at or near the area where the oblique and abdominals meet. Pull the skinfold in a vertical direction.
Blood Viscosity
The thickness and “stickiness” of blood and how it affects its flow through the blood vessels.
Protein calorie yield per gram
4 calories
Plasma Membrane
The cellular membrane made of lipids and proteins that forms the external boundary of the cytoplasm and regulates the passage of molecules in and out of the cytoplasm.
Oxidative Phosphorylatio
The energy-producing process that occurs in mitochondria in the presence of oxygen.
Muscular Force Couple
Two or more muscles generate force in different linear directions at the same time to produce one movement.
Calories
The amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water by 1°C (4,184 joules) at a pressure of 1 atmosphere.
Stretch-Shortening Cycle
The cycling between the eccentric (stretch) action of a muscle and the concentric (shortening) action of the same muscle.
Autonomic Nervous System
The part of the nervous system responsible for involuntary functions and movement.
Anaerobic Glycolysis
The anaerobic energy system converting glucose to lactate when oxygen is limited.
Stretch-Shortening Cycle
The cycling between the eccentric (stretch) action of a muscle and the concentric (shortening) action of the same muscle.
Golgi Apparatus
An organelle of folded membranes responsible for packaging and transporting membrane-bound proteins.
First Class Lever
For a first-class lever, the fulcrum (axis) is located between the effort and the load (resistance).
Static Balance
The ability to remain upright and balanced when the body is at rest
