Indications

A

Overdose of narcotics or any indication of substance abuse with respiratory depression.
AMS of unknown etiology
Code 500 with possibility of narcotic abuse or if pt is on prescribed narcotics.

Side effect

A

May precipitate withdrawl symptoms of HTN, tachycardia, violent behavior, n/v, arrhythmias, and seizures.

Precautions

A

Short duration - potential for rapid relapse of respiratory depression - have supplemental O2 and resuscitation equipment ready, get prn order from MD.
May need to use very large doses with Darvon OD.
Some drugs it reverses: lomotil, talwin, staldol, nubain, paregoric, darvocet.
