Nanoparticles Flashcards
What is the size of a nanoparticle?
Between 1-100 nm in size and contains a few hundred atoms
Where do nanoparticles naturally occur?
Fried food and smoke
What are some advantages of nanoparticles?
Strengthens the rubber in tyres
Give black inks and leather their colour
In solar cells to absorb sunlight thanks to their large surface area
May replace silicon crystals has they conduct electricity well
What are some disadvantages of nanoparticles?
They could enter the liver and brain and have similar effects to asbestos on the body
It is also not know how they behave in soil
Why do nanoparticles have different properties compared to their bulk materials
The tiny size of nanoparticles compared to bulk material
A large surface area to volume ratio
Advantages of nanoparticles in Sunscreen
They give better skin coverage
More efficient protection form the Sun’s UV rays
They are clear and colourless - makes cream invisible
They do not degrade on exposure to the sun
Disadvantages of nanoparticles in Sunscreen
Potential cell damage in the body as they are so small they may be able to penetrate cell membranes or be breathed in
They may be more reactive/toxic than bulk materials
ay have harmful effects on the environment
