Native americans and Manifest Destiny Flashcards
Trail of tears
Native americans’ ordeal. In 1830, southern congressmen proposed a bill to move the Indian tribes from their lands. The bill passed but the Supreme Court suppressed said law. But the President and the population of Georgia overlooked this decision and expelled the natives from their homes, sometimes using force. Natives asked for help from the federal government. They ended up signing a removal treaty from their own lands.
Their removal is represented in a painting in the 40’s by Lindneux.

Manifest destiny
The idea that white Americans were divinely ordained to settle the entire continent of North America. Ordinary Americans started moving west, hoping for more wealth and convinced that the Indians on those lands would be happy to adopt their democracy and way of life. Represented in the allegory of a white angelic woman in a John Gast painting in the 19th.
Lady liberty
Named after the roman goddess Libertas, who led to the roman Republic, and represented the freeing of slaves. Was given to the US by France at the end of 19th.
She represents freedom, and the torch represents knowledge.
Columbia
She was an evolution from lady liberty but stoped being referred to by the 20’s. Named this way in refference to Columbus, a way to distance America from the UK. She is America, the capitol (District of Columbia), the ideal mother, a way to distance oneself from natives.
Freedom vs liberty
Liberty has a political meaning. Freedom is more general and associated to slaves and was used in the civil rights movement. It was then used to describe a free market, or the free-world.
