Nature vs Nurture Flashcards
What is nature?
Born with the ability/want to do this
What is nurture?
We learn how to complete the action from those around us
Examples of nature
Blinking, sleeping, being male or female
Examples of nurture
Speaking, walking, eating, singing
What is agents of socialisation?
Group of people that teaches us about the society
What is primary socialisation?
First stage of life-long learning process, this primary relationship form within the family e.g. parents/carers
Identify the ways in which Horst (feral child) differs from a ‘normal’ 3 year old child?
He whimpered and growled instead of talking, slept curled up, raised by a dog, crawled, didn’t know how to use a toilet
Can you identify any similarities between Horst (feral child) and other younger children?
Loving of the dog, shows this nature- to be loved and feel affection
How does this case study support the view that human behaviour is linked to socialisation?
- Horst would act different if raised by family
- we need our family to be able to learn the general human behaviour
- the things, people we are socialised around, that we learn behaviours from them
What are feral children?
Wild = feral
Raise themselves without human contact or raised by animals: picking up the ‘norms’ for animals
Why are sociologists interested in feral children?
Natural experiment, we’re not allowed to carry out
Humans and animals
Issues if we’re not raised by humans
What do the feral children case studies show us?
Teach us that young humans are neglected, they find affection from others e.g. animals. We need to be socialised around our family so we can be able to pick up the ‘norms’ of human behaviour. The impacts of being raised by animals bring long-time consequences e.g. can’t communicate or can’t make a sentence
