NAV 1 (Lec) Flashcards
is a type of SONAR (Sound Navigation And Ranging) device used to determine the depth of water by transmitting sound pulses into water.

UKC
Under-Keel Clearance
is the vertical distance between the lowest part of the ship’s hull and the seabed.
Under-Keel Clearance (UKC)
Creation of sound waves can be done by two methods:
- Magnetostriction
- Electrostriction
The echo sounder uses the formula
distance= speed x time/2
The echo sounder system comprises four components:
Transducer, Pulse generator, Amplifier, and Recorder
the speed of sound in water is known
1,500 meters per second
Here the depth is displayed digitally (in figures) in metres.
Digital display
With a _____________ a mark is burned on a roll of paper indicating the depth at regular intervals. With this display a chart of the bottom is produced.
Paper recorder
With this display a similar picture is produced as that of the paper recorder. One can either have it in monochrome (shades of one colour) or in full colour. The colour option allows the operator to determine the nature of the bottom

He discovered the technique of echo sounding which turned out to be inefficient in spotting icebergs, but a great tool to measure the depth of the sea.
Alexander Behm
Behm had his invention patented in
1913
is a device that measures depth of water by measuring the time intervals between pulses of acoustic sound propagation that travel to the bottom of the sea
